Verla Groundwood Mill and the village around it was established in the early 1870s on the border between the rural communities of Jaala and Valkeala in the northern part of the Kymenlaakso. Verla was part of the development that resulted in Kymenlaakso becoming the most important wood-processing area in Finland.
Verla’s Groundwood and Board Mill became Finland’s first factory museum in 1972. The museum is located in the village of Verla, in the northern part of the Kymenlaakso region, and is part of the Verla World Heritage site.
